Many of you have weighed in of late, telling me you have thought about going to Bonnaroo for years but haven't made the plunge. I will say it isn't for everyone, and there is a lot of expense and planning that goes into having a successful festival, especially for the over-50 set. If you are thinking now that you might want to consider going next year and do not want to be caught by surprise by dates and expenses here are perhaps some helpful pointers:
Tickets go on sale around March 1, internet purchase only on the
Bonnaroo website.
V.I.P. tickets were $1,200 for a pair (this year), and were only sold in pairs. Regular admission was around $250 maximum. Both of those categories were available at least until the end of March which gives most a month of cushion for that part of the expenses. *Note: R.V. passes are extra and must be purchased with the ticket.
R.V.'s should be booked no later than December 2008 for the following year, and will cost between $1,500 and $2,500. And that is just the beginning of the expenses entailed with taking an R.V.--hardly worth it in Mony's book.
Airfare books quickly. Give yourself two extra days if financially possible. Logistically it's tough to enter and leave the festival with the masses.
Airport shuttles to the festival are available but somewhat impractical with all the camping stuff you will need unless you are lucky enough to be meeting a friend who has invested in an R.V. or a tent.
You can also pay additional money to stay in one of the local hotel rooms and shuttled over to the festival each day.
The Bonnaroo Discussion board on the Bonnaroo website can be helpful but rather hard to negotiate (was ultimately not very helpful for my specific questions). I got much more help by dealing with veterans, although I did enjoy reading many of the discussion threads for their immense entertainment value.
All of this being said, if you are
still interested in joining the love train of Camp Sick or one of the others mentioned in this blog there is a large possibility you can do it and love it.
