gas

Last week my neighbor informed me that Nashville had a gas problem. No, not flatulence--we are out of gas here, people. I found it hard to believe, but later I drove downtown and witnessed a line a mile long, stretching from downtown almost to Vanderbilt, a full mile. While much of that line was probably people getting onto I-40, a substantial part of it was people waiting in line for a chance at the pumps at the TigerMart across the street from the Tennessean newspaper offices. They had to pass two other stations on the way that were entirely empty and were therefore willing to wait for an hour. Many of those people have a ten to twenty mile commute, so I could see their point. My neighbor was almost giddy in the telling. She had driven miles searching for gas, then when she found some waited for an hour to fill the tank of her BMW. In the same breath she mentioned that her brother had been willing to drive a few gallons to her a hundred fifty miles, from Knoxville before she found her tankful. Both she and I are within walking distance of two grocery stores, a drugstore, the library, a produce stand, a post office and the best durned mall in Nashville. During this fascinating conversation she revealed that she is within walking distance of both her kids' schools. It is a very strange time in our country.
